Background

Protection of Water in Armed Conflicts

Education and Training Online Courses
The Geneva Water Hub, in collaboration with the International Institute of Humanitarian Law, has developed a new e-learning course which aims to raise awareness and deepen understanding of the critical issue surrounding the protection of water and water-related infrastructure in armed conflicts.

The Geneva Water Hub, in collaboration with the International Institute of Humanitarian Law of Sanremo, is pleased to announce the launch of a new 7-week e-learning course, “Ending the Weaponization of Water in Armed Conflicts” (3 November – 19 December 2025).

This course will address the pressing issue of attacks on water and water-related infrastructure during armed conflicts, which threaten civilian life, dignity, and health long after hostilities have ceased. Participants will examine the legal protections afforded to indispensable civilian objects such as water supplies, and how international humanitarian law frames the obligations of parties to conflict.

Designed for military officers, government officials, staff of international and civil society organizations, law enforcement officers, humanitarians, and academics, the course provides a unique opportunity to deepen knowledge of the legal and practical dimensions of safeguarding water in conflict situations.

Join us as we work to advance the protection of water as a vital element of civilian survival and as a cornerstone for lasting peace.
