Organised in the framework of the online course on "International Water Law", in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), this webinar focuses on the protection of freshwater systems in times of armed conflict in the light of the UN 2023 Water Conference.

The following questions will be addressed during the webinar.

  • What are the impacts of attacks or damage on freshwater systems and on the civilian population?
  • What precautionary measures can be adopted by parties to an armed conflict to prevent these impacts?
  • Does International Humanitarian Law (IHL) provide sufficient protection to water systems in the conduct of hostilities?
  • Did the UN Water Conference advance the protection of water systems in times of armed conflict, particularly in light of the informal debate held in the Security Council on 22 March 2023 (link to video) at the initiative of Switzerland and Mozambique?
