We are pleased to announce the launch of a new interactive map that brings together summaries of written statementssubmitted by over 80 States and 10+ international organisations to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), as part of its ongoing Advisory Opinion on the obligations of States in respect of climate change.

Explore the map:

The map offers a unique view into how the human right to water, rising water-related conflicts, and the broader implications of climate change are being addressed at the highest level of international law. It provides insight into legal arguments, normative framings, and global positions on water as both a human right and a peacebuilding tool.

The release comes at a pivotal moment:
On 23 July 2025, the ICJ issued a landmark advisory opinion declaring that climate inaction may constitute an internationally wrongful act, and affirming that a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment is a fundamental human right.

This tool complements the Court’s opinion by enabling users to:

  • Trace how States and organisations frame water rights in the context of climate change
  • Compare legal narratives and priorities across regions
  • Support research, education, and advocacy on water, justice, and peace

We invite scholars, legal professionals, diplomats, and practitioners to explore the map and engage with this evolving legal and political conversation.
