Prof Türk’s opening remarks included underlining the importance of the International Water Law, as developed in the two relevant UN Conventions and the complementarity of water basin cooperation systems and the general principles of International Water Law. He welcomed the positive experience that the representatives of UN member states described in the discussion at the meeting.

In the margins of the fourth UN Special Thematic Session on Water and Disasters, the side event “‘Transboundary Water Cooperation for Sustainable Development – the role of the Water Convention” took place on 25 June at the United Nations Headquarters, New York.
The side event co-organised by the Permanent Missions to the United Nations of the Republic of Chad, the Republic of Kazakhstan, Lebanon, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Senegal, Switzerland and United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The event was an opportunity to:
- Discuss the Water Convention and the tools it offers to promote transboundary water cooperation
- Review the benefits derived by countries in implementing the Convention
- Discuss how to accelerate accession to the Convention as a means to strengthen transboundary water cooperation and sustainable development worldwide.
Prof. Danilo Türk, Former President of Slovenia, Chair of the Global High-Level Panel on Water and Peace, Lead Policy Advisor of the Geneva Water Hub had the honour of addressing the opening remarks with a focus on peace rooted in the concept of sustainable development.
