New article in Globe - Water Crimes and International Law: The Need for Accountability

02.12.2025 Shaping Law and Policy
As conflicts escalate worldwide, attacks on water systems and the deprivation of civilian access to water are emerging as critical violations of international law. This article examines why accountability for water-related crimes is urgently needed.

We are pleased to share the publication of an article by Mara Tignino, Senior Lecturer at the University of Geneva and Senior International Law Specialist at the Platform for International Water Law, Geneva Water Hub, recently released in GLOBE Magazine (Graduate Institute Geneva).

“Water Crimes and International Law: The Need for Accountability” explores how deliberate attacks on water systems, deprivation of access to safe water, and environmental damage in armed conflicts constitute serious violations of international law — potentially amounting to war crimes, crimes against humanity, or even falling within discussions on ecocide. The article highlights urgent gaps in accountability frameworks and calls for stronger legal recognition and enforcement to protect civilians and ecosystems.
