New academic publication released

13.11.2025 Setting the Research Agenda
The Geneva Water Hub and University of Geneva are contributing new evidence on how water governance can support peace processes.

Our latest publication, “(De)constructing meanings and pathways of water and peace”, published in ScienceDirect and co-authored by Laura Turley, Christian Bréthaut, Sumit Vij, Quentin Parent, Aline Wambüi Stüdeli and Irene Fiammetta Muscas, examines how water can serve as a platform for dialogue, cooperation and conflict prevention.

What the research shows:
- Analyses multiple cases where water institutions helped reduce tensions and enabled negotiation between actors.
- Demonstrates how data, governance mechanisms and shared decision-making spaces can reduce uncertainty and build trust.
- Places Geneva and the Geneva Water Hub’s work within the wider Water and Peace policy agenda, linking academic research with diplomacy.

Why it matters:
Effective water cooperation frameworks:
• prevent escalation during periods of tension
• improve coordination among governments, communities and technical actors
• create entry points for dialogue, even when other diplomatic channels are limited

This publication contributes directly to the Geneva Water Hub's mission: turning scientific insights into practical tools for peacebuilding, ahead of key international processes such as the UN 2026 Water Conference.
