High-level session on the regional cooperation initiative on the Senegal-Mauritanian Aquifer Basin

The Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania and Senegal commit to cooperate on shared groundwater as foundation for regional peace and stability, sustainable development and climate adaptation. Ministers in charge of water gathered in Geneva to sign a declaration to engage on that path. Dialogue between states to achieve this important political step has been facilitated and supported technically by the Geneva Water Hub, a centre of the University of Geneva working on the analysis of hydropolitics and on the promotion of water as an instrument for peace and cooperation, and by the Secretariat of the UNECE Water Convention and IGRAC.

Le groupe de travail régional (GTR) pour la coopération transfrontalière sur le bassin versant Sénégal-Mauritanie (BASM), composé des quatre États partageant le bassin, ainsi que de l'OMVG et de l'OMVS qui sont impliqués dans ce dialogue régional, a pour mandat d'induire une coopération transfrontalière sur le BASM. Depuis mai 2020, la GTR est entrée dans la phase de conception d'une vision commune et d'un projet commun pour remplir le mandat qu'elle a reçu. Le dialogue régional sur le MCAB est facilité et encouragé par le Geneva Water Hub, le Secrétariat de laConvention sur la protection et l'utilisation des cours d'eau transfrontaliers et des lacs internationaux(Convention sur l'eau) géré par la Commission économique des Nations Unies pour l'Europe (CEE-ONU) et par le Centre international d'évaluation des ressources en eau(IGRAC).
