Successful Launch of the Global Alliance to Spare Water from Armed Conflicts

30.05.2024 Protection of Water During & After Armed Conflict
Last week, on May 23, we proudly launched the Global Alliance to Spare Water from Armed Conflicts at the UN Headquarters. This initiative, initiated by the Republic of Slovenia, Switzerland, and the Geneva Water Hub, brings together state and non-state actors to protect water resources in conflict zones.

During the launch of the Global Alliance to Spare Water from Armed Conflicts on 23 May at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Caroline Pellaton, our Operations Director, emphasized the critical importance of our mission:

"Sparing water from the ravages of armed conflicts goes beyond ensuring its mere delivery. It encompasses vital aspects of survival—food security, livelihoods, health, and above all, human dignity. By joining forces and pooling our resources, we can reduce the suffering of innocent civilians and pave the way for enduring peace, stability, reconciliation, and development."

The launch was a great success, highlighting our collective commitment to safeguarding water resources and infrastructure, which are essential for the well-being and dignity of civilian populations affected by conflict.

Our alliance is dedicated to promoting knowledge to support evidence-based decision-making, enhancing international law, and fostering collaboration to mitigate the impacts of armed conflicts on water resources.

Let's continue to work tirelessly to protect our most vital resource and ensure a safer, healthier future for all.
